Shan Wu

Shan is a fourth-year student at University Park with majors in Art History, Spanish, and Medieval Studies. Her research focuses on medieval art and architecture in Spain, considering how art was used in a political and cultural context. Shan plans to pursue at PhD in Art History following her undergraduate studies, bringing new perspectives to the field of medieval studies and encouraging others to enjoy medieval art history.

Project Description:
My undergraduate honors thesis explores cross-cultural artistic exchange in medieval Iberia by focusing on the Basilica of San Isidoro in León, Spain. Though the peninsula was separated by religious and political borders, artistic ideas spread across regions, serving as cultural and political tools. I argue that the medieval Kingdom of León used art objects to grow its political power and establish a distinct identity in a time of shifting ruling powers and religions.
