This research explores the concept of retributive justice, and whether it is morally justified as a guiding principle of punishment. This research will examine its historical development and its prevalence in the penal system of the United States. By examining the arguments provided by modern retributivists, namely Michael Moore, Herbert Morris, and Jean Hampton, this research aims to demonstrate that retributive justice is unsound, and it is ultimately a deleterious species of penal philosophy.
