Management of Spotted Lantern-flies with Milkweed

Marissa Palau

Spotted lantern-fly (SLF) is an invasive plant-hopper that feeds on economically important plants like grapevines. Milkweeds produce several toxins to defend against herbivory, and appear effective against SLF. Results from choice and no-choice experiments showed mortality on swamp (Asclepias incarnata), showy (speciosa), common (syriaca), and butterfly (tuberosa) milkweed using grape and starvation (no food) treatments as controls. Current studies explore potential relationships between cardenolide and pregnane glycoside concentrations in these milkweed species and SLF mortality.
