This is a qualitative thesis comprised of comparative case studies (the United States, Canada, and Denmark) exploring the reasons why the United States is the only country of the eight Arctic nations that has not ratified the United Nations International Law of the Sea Treaty. The results show that the main factors influencing a country's likelihood of treaty ratification are the presence of nonrenewable energy business interest groups, regime type, and public opinion.
