Gaba Teach English in Japan Program

Interested in spending time in Japan? Want to teach English to motivated English language learners? Unlike many other fellowships or internships, the Gaba Teach English in Japan program is a professional position for teaching 1-on-1 English in Japan to adult learners. Candidates apply and are hired for yearlong, paid teaching positions. For international (non-Japanese) applicants, Gaba offers a visa sponsorship program to Japan.

Gaba provides a set of thorough certifications, so prior teaching experience and accreditation are not strict requirements to apply. However, one or both is preferable to neither.

Application Deadline: Rolling

Eligibility:

  • Must have a fluent command of English (both spoken and written)
  • Must commit to at least one full six-month contract term
  • Must be available to attend three-day Initial Certification in full

  • (Preferred) CELTA, TEFL, or TESOL certification
  • (Preferred) Prior ESL/EFL teaching experience
  • (Preferred) Experience working in a corporate setting

For applicants seeking Gaba visa sponsorship, Gaba can provide a Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa to Japan which typically has a duration of one year for first-time holders. Eligibility for that program requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree (or above) from an accredited university where English was the medium of instruction OR three years of verifiable full-time ESL teaching experience
  • Newly sponsored instructors are expected to teach with Gaba for two full contract terms (i.e. 12 months)
