Antibiotic resistance is an increasing public health issue that needs to be addressed. Hydrazine carbonothiols were previously shown to inhibit the ribosome rescue mechanism, trans-translation. The ribosomal protein L7/L12 was determined to be the molecular target of the hydrazides, as demonstrated by mass spectroscopy analysis and growth recovery experiments. These results suggest a new mechanism of action for trans-translation inhibitors in bacteria.
