Natural Products Isolated from Soil Samples in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania Show Promising Antibacterial Properties against the Bioterrorism Agent, Bacillus anthracis

Annalee Schmidt

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria continue to pose a significant threat to human health worldwide, and very few antibiotics have been recently discovered to combat this problem. In this research, three natural product extracts from soil samples were purified and analyzed for their antimicrobial properties. Preliminary data indicates that compounds AMS- EA-001, AMS-EA-002 and AMS-EM-003 kill Bacillus anthracis by inhibiting the essential protein synthesis pathway. Genome sequencing analysis of resistant mutants will be used to validate these results.
