Marina Naumova

Hello! I am a fourth year Biology major minoring in Plant Pathology, International Agriculture, Spanish, French, and Korean. I am particularly interested in plant pathology research, and in my lab we study the bacterium P. syringae (a pathogen that can affect a variety of plants, including crucial crops). I plan to pursue a graduate degree to study the effect of the plant microbiome on disease resistance, and hope to partake in international work to manage crop disease.

Current Research Project:
Bacteriocins and their role in pathogen survival in the bean leaf phyllosphere.
Project Description:
In my plant pathology lab we study the bacterium P. syringae, a pathogen that can affect a variety of plants including crucial crops. In the past, I have performed bioinformatics research on toxin-antitoxin systems and looked at the effects of various environmental conditions on recombination rates between antibiotic-resistant P. syringae mutants. Currently, I am part of a project that looks at the connection between plant defense mechanisms and leaf surface metabolites, and am also looking at the changes in tomato leaf surface viral communities throughout disease progression.
