Associations Among Social Support, Perceived Stress, Physical Activity, and Sitting Time Among College Students

by Jamie H Kang
Social support (SS) is associated with increased physical activity (PA) and reduced sitting time (ST), but the role of perceived stress is less understood. Findings suggest that high SS was associated with lower stress (v=-0.188, p=0.00), and lower stress was significantly associated with higher vigorous PA (v=-0.128, p=0.004) and lower ST (v=0.036, p=0.442). Thus, health promotion efforts should include fostering SS along with relaxation techniques to reduce stress and promote PA/reduce ST in college students.
