This project endeavors to answer the question: why is China becoming more active in the South China Sea? Ninety militarized incidents from 1970 to 2012, show an increased intensity that exemplifies the current dynamic nature of the disputes. The project examines the disputes in the context of Chinese nationalism and Chinese regional hegemony in an effort to better understand Chinese goals and the overall Chinese perspective of the South China Sea.
