The Dual Nature of the Student-Athlete Identity: How Being Both a Student and Athlete Impacts an Individual’s Self-Concept

Peyton Loomis

Previous research focused on student-athletes, however, there is a gap in the data looking specifically at student-athletes from an identity theory perspective. This research aims to obtain a better understanding the role both identities play for an individual. A survey instrument was used to measure the identities of the student athletes from a large Northeastern University. Data will be analyzed to explore how both identities impact self-perception, academic involvement, time-management, group identities, and overall well-being.
