The effects of proximity to active hydrocarbon seeps on the abundance and diversity of fauna associated with deep water octocorals.

Orli Glickman

To examine effects of natural hydrocarbon seepage on health of deep-water octocorals, we have examined the effects of proximity to seepage on the abundance and diversity of 13 morphospecies associated with the octocoral Callogorgia delta. Our preliminary analysis indicates that the abundance of catshark eggs is higher and ophiuroids is lower on non-seep compared to seep C. delta. Data was compared to Paramurecia sp. B3 and showed greater occurrence of other associates than C. delta.
