Staphylococcus aureus is a highly virulent bacterium that infects over 1 million people each year, with the ability to colonize and infect every organ in the human body. Specifically, we know S. aureus protein HemA controls synthesis of heme, while protein HssR regulates the export of heme when it reaches toxic cellular levels. Towards the goal of understanding HemA and HssR’s functions, we applied protein expression, purification, and crystallization techniques to solve both molecules’ structures.
