Utilizing Genome Sequencing to Determine the Source of E.coli Outbreaks

by Paula Tabaschek
Clinical diagnostic cases revealed multiple calves, found in three different farms around Central Pennsylvania, experienced similar illnesses caused by Escherichia coli. Fecal composites and environmental samples obtained from a creek shared among the three farms all showed significant amounts of Escherichia coli. This study investigates the genetic similarities of the Escherichia Coli samples from the target farms by using whole genome sequencing to determine the source of the outbreaks.
