Assessment of the effects of intrauterine dextrose infusion on clinical cure rate, daily milk yield, daily rumination, metabolic stress and inflammation in post-partum dairy cows diagnosed with clinical metritis

by Julia Hamilton
This study assesses the effects of intrauterine dextrose infusion in dairy cows with clinical metritis (CM). Postpartum cows (n=351) were screened, those with fetid red-brownish watery vaginal discharge (n=53) were classified as CM cows and randomly assigned to either: 1) CONV (n=27): two administrations of ceftiofur or 2) DEX (n=26): three dextrose intrauterine infusions. No difference was found in cure rate, however, DEX cows produced less milk and had higher systemic inflammation than CONV cows.
