Masculinity in Positions of High and Low Power

Nicholas Mallender

Being primed with high power leads to reduced perspective taking and empathy. Because power is associated with masculinity and perspective taking and empathy are considered to be feminine characteristics, we hypothesize that threats to power (i.e. imagining having low power) will lead to the same outcomes as masculinity threats (i.e. public discomfort, anger, reduced perspective taking, reduced empathy) for men but not women. Results of our study (N = 402) partially support our hypothesis.
