Nurses’ Perception of Palliative Care and its Impact on Palliative Care Referrals in the Acute Care Setting

Kalei Kowalchik

Palliative care (PC) utilizes a collaborative healthcare team to focus on a patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual quality of life while managing his/her symptoms and alleviating suffering associated with his/her debilitating illness(s). In the acute care setting, nurses often recommend to physicians which patients should be receiving PC; however, their limited understanding of PC decrease patient referral rates. A qualitative descriptive study performed assessed nurses’ perception of PC and facilitators and barriers towards PC referrals.
