The Living Filter at Penn State is a 600-acre area of agricultural and forested lands to which all of the Universiy’s treated wastewater is spray irrigated. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) consists of more than 3000 compounds which are utilized in products stain resistant clothing. The objectives of this study were to determine the concentrations of PFAS compounds in (i) wasteater influent and effluent; and and (ii) groundwater monitoring wells at the Living Filter.
