Generating a Novel Methodology to Identify Critical Defects in Complex Metal AM Components

by Micaela Stover
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect that defects have on the mechanical performance of geometrically complex engine brackets. The winning designs from the GE Jet Engine Bracket challenge were modeled in the finite element analysis software ANSYS. A preliminary methodology to place defects in these brackets to determine the impact on the stress field was devised. This methodology can be applied to other AM parts to improve the design of components.
