Male Legislators as Substantive Representatives for Women

Resham Patel

The thesis examines the role male representatives play as substantive representatives for women in the 1990’s and the 2010’s. I hypothesized that three factors will influence the rate at which male legislators cosponsor women’s issues bills: the number of women in the House of Representatives, public opinion on women’s issues, and the gender wage gap. Through regression analyses, I look for significant relationships between these variables. My findings provide substantial guidance for future research.
