Emotion recognition is crucial to communication, interpersonal skills, and empathy. ASL is a visual language that uses facial expressions and gestures to convey emotion, thus, exposure to ASL may improve perceptual abilities to better discriminate between emotions. This study compares recognition performance of ASL-users against non-ASL users in two sensory conditions. We hypothesize that ASL users will outperform the control group on the face task, but will show no advantage on the voice task.
